A. Leadership Training and Mentoring

This training uses a mix of reading, discussion and mentoring to better meet GoC Key Leadership Competencies. It works using clients’ own leadership situations to:

  • Address challenging situations successfully
  • Demonstrate expected leadership behaviours in daily work
  • Meet performance agreement competency objectives

I developed this approach over four years as a member of ESDC’s Mentoring Program. Discussion topics include specific challenges and interests, such as:

  • Maintaining work-life balance
  • Leading through difficult times
  • Briefing senior executives
  • Difficult conversations and performance management
  • Ethical situations
  • Getting the experience for advancement

Each 60-minute session explores topics as follow:

  • Review the leadership competency or topic – what is expected and why
  • Discuss reading material (ex. Harvard Business Review)
  • Analyze a real-life situation – what is challenging, available tools, competencies at play and how to apply them
  • Share my own experience, if relevant
  • Consider next steps

Sessions are usually every 3-4 weeks.

You can buy this tailored 11-hour training package for individuals for $3,300, or contact me for a free consultation.

Training is covered by your departmental training budget.

Once a session is booked, clients may reschedule with at least 24 hours notice. Otherwise I reserve the right to bill them for the unattended session.

B. Managing in Complexity – Specialized Program

Building on Sara Filbee’s excellent book – Managing in Complexity – this eight-session program explores innovative ways to lead in an uncertain and fast-changing environment.

We start with a session to set participants’ expectations and introduce the key concepts supporting complexity management.

The next six sessions focus on individual approaches to strengthen your management practice:

  • The need to be both emotionally involved and detached,
  • Acknowledging and enabling our interdependence,
  • Building trust,
  • The importance of work culture and how we do things,
  • Working with metrics (and knowing their limits),
  • Improving your meetings.

A final session will synthesize lessons learned and include a formal coaching session to help participants set out their next steps.

Sessions will be held every 3-4 weeks, usually over five months. This gives participants time to reflect on their exploration and add new practices to their daily management and leadership.
